At Atree I’m working on understanding community-based wet-waste composting in Bangalore, India
Urban solid waste/garbage is a worldwide problem, posing both local public health hazards and contributing to global GHG emissions. As an alternative to conventional centralized, municipality-managed solid waste disposal, many citizen-managed initiatives are also emerging. Through a combination of legislative pressure and citizen initiatives, Bangalore city has emerged as one of the pioneers in community-based garbage composting. Today, there are more than 450 residential complexes are segregating waste at source.
This project aims to study community-based garbage segregation and composting initiatives in Bangalore city in order to identify socio-technical elements that are crucial to the performance of such systems, including their methods of treating wet waste. It also proposes to carry out a desk review of experiences elsewhere, to come up with recommendations for replication and scaling in different contexts. The Bangalore experience can provide valuable insights for other parts of the world that face garbage disposal challenges. Cities of Chengdu, China and Vancouver, Canada have expressed interest in community-based composting systems.

Independent Research Consultant
As an independent consultant I provide research services to research institutes, universities, labs and foundations. I execute research projects that aim to increase long term sustainability of diverse systems. To do so I use the methodologies and tools of industrial ecology to investigate ways to lower adverse environmental, social and environmental impacts. These methodologies include industrial symbiosis, material & energy flow analysis, resource utilization maps, substance flow analysis, design for the environment and life cycle assessment.

As a collaborator I analyze, decipher and interpret information and data to the design team at studiosmu. We provide instructional graphics services that can help visually represent complex information and data. Our services can help companies and research groups present the story of their concept, scientific paper, study or thesis/report in a manner that’s easy for people to understand without having to read through the entire report. Our aim is to make complex ideas in science look cool and stay correct.

This is an honorary position to develop projects in collaboration with researchers at Center for Industrial Ecology. I collaborate with research teams to design and implement projects using industrial ecology in the Indian context. I also advise student teams and connect Yale University faculty and research teams to institutes, government agencies and industries in India for specific projects. These projects apply concepts and tools in Industrial Ecology to understand flows of materials and energy in developing economies in south Asia.

Resource Optimization Initiative established in 2003, promotes the implementation of concepts and tools of Industrial Ecology in strategies for resource optimization in developing countries through research-oriented projects and public outreach. In June 2009 I joined as a consultant to revive ROI’s research activities, after the sudden and premature demise of ROI’s director and co-founder Mr. Ramesh Ramaswamy in 2008. In October 2009 I was employed as ROI’s Research Director and served on this role till August 2012. During this time I led the research program; I initiated and supervised 18 research projects in collaboration with and funded by reputed international and Indian organizations. I have also guided over 20 international and local graduates/undergraduates on internship projects that use industrial ecology methods and tools.
